Mean what you say

When life gets hectic, we sometimes say things that we simply do not mean to our children. ” I will be off the phone in 5 minutes and then we can read this story together.” But when we are done with the phone call, we head off doing something else, our promise to them forgotten.

Saying things and not following through is very confusing for children. In the end, they learn that we can’t be trusted to fulfil our promises. So in future, mean what you say and make sure you can follow through with it. This might mean making a more limited promise – and that’s OK!
