Praising our children is one of the most important things we can do. But to be effective, praise needs to be linked to a specific behaviour. We all have a habit of saying things like,“good boy” or “well done” but think about this from the child’s point of view. They might not know exactly what it is they’ve done well.
Label your praise. Say things like, “well done for helping your brother with his maths,” or “good boy for tidying your bedroom when I asked you to”. That way, children are more likely to repeat the behaviour.
