Use timers to signal the end of activities

Many children find it difficult to finish one activity and start another, especially if they have been having fun with you. Try using timers. Seeing the timer and hearing a “ding!” makes it easier for children to understand that it’s time to move on.

You don’t have to buy expensive timers. Use what you already have at home: egg timers, oven timers, or set the timer on your phone. Younger children can’t tell the time, so avoid talking about the clock. Before you start, explain the process– and let your child know what will happen next. For example: “We will play until we hear a “ding!” and then we will go to the shop.”
