- Until they are one year old, babies should sleep on their back both during the night and during naps. This has been proven to reduce the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome)
- Make sure your baby has a safe sleeping environment. Use a fitted sheet on a firm, new matters. Don’t include any pillows, bumpers or stuffed animals in beds for babies—these can all increase the risk of suffocation. Use a simple, cotton waffle blanket to keep baby warm.
- Place them their sleeping space so that their feet are at the end so they cannot wriggle down under blankets
- Make sure your baby’s bed is in a safe space—make sure that they cannot reach curtain cords, wires or anything that they could pull down on themselves
- Co-sleeping is not recommended—if you bring baby in to bed to feed or comfort, return them to their own space to sleep. Do not let the baby in to the bed with anyone who has been drinking or smoking.
- Keep the room at a temperature that’s comfortable for you at night – about 18C (65F) is ideal. It is rarely necessary to keep the heat on at night.
